Mock Trial


The CBA Nunavut Branch annual Mock Trial took place on Monday, May 26th. 

Where: The Nunavut Court of Justice, Courtroom 1


We were delighted to welcome the Honourable Justice David W. Stratas for this event. As of December 2009 he is a Justice of the Federal Court of Appeal and a member ex officio of the Federal Court. Justice Strata
s is a distinguished legal practitioner, educator, author, and speaker. For more information about Justice Stratas and his legal career, you can read his full resume.

On Wednesday, June 23 at 5 p.m., the Nunavut Branch of the CBA will be hosting a talk by the Honourable Justice David Watt of the Ontario Court of Appeal and the Honourable Justice Michelle Fuerst of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

Justices Watt and Fuerst will be speaking on emerging criminal law issues affecting all practitioners.

Justices Watt and Fuerst will be speaking on emerging criminal law issues affecting all practitioners. 

Likely topics include: 

  • The new approach to exclusion of evidence under s. 24(2) of the Charter (post Grant and Harrison);
  • judges' expectation of counsel in conducting jury trials; and
  • effective advocacy techniques.

About the speakers

 The Honourable Justice David Watt

  • Judge of the Court of Appeal for Ontario since 2007.
  • Appointed Judge of the Supreme Court of Ontario, as it then was, in 1985.
  • Authored the Ontario Court of Justice's Criminal Proceedings Rules, and the Ontario Specimen Jury Instructions (Criminal).
  •  Distinguished legal practitioner, educator and author (including of Tremeear's Annotated Criminal Code and Watt's Manual of Criminal Evidence).

The Honourable Justice Michelle Fuerst

  • Judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice since 2002.
  • President of the Criminal Lawyers' Association and the Ontario Branch of the Canadian Bar Association.
  • Distinguished legal practitioner, educator and author, including of Tremeear's Annotated Criminal Code.
